How to Solve a Rubik's Cube: A Beginner Layer-by-Layer Method

Build the first-layer cross, finish two layers, then orient and position the last layer with a small set of repeatable algorithms.

This beginner method solves a 3x3 in layers. It is slower than advanced speedcubing methods, but each stage has a visible checkpoint, so you can find mistakes before they spread into the next step.

Read the notation first and turn slowly. Each linked formula opens in the cube algorithm player, where you can replay it on a 3D cube. If your cube no longer matches any stage, use the state solver instead of applying random moves.

Before solving: pieces, centers, and notation

Centers have one color and define the solved color of each face. Edges have two colors. Corners have three. During a normal solve, pieces move around the fixed center scheme; you are placing each edge and corner between the centers whose colors it contains.

Hold the cube with the face you are turning directly toward you when reading a move. R, L, U, D, F, and B mean right, left, up, down, front, and back. A bare letter is a 90-degree clockwise turn as viewed straight at that face; a prime mark means counterclockwise; 2 means a half turn.

  • R turn the right face clockwise.
  • R' turn the right face counterclockwise.
  • R2 turn the right face 180 degrees.

Step 1: build the first-layer cross

Choose white as the first-layer color. Find the four white edge pieces and place them around the white center. Do not stop at a white plus: the side color of every cross edge must also line up with its matching side center.

A simple approach is to move one white edge into the top layer, rotate U until its side sticker matches the correct center, then turn that side 180 degrees to send the edge to the white face. Protect already solved edges while working on the next one.

  • Checkpoint. White has a cross, and all four side stickers form short matching lines with their centers.
  • Common mistake. A white cross edge is flipped or matched to the wrong side center.

Step 2: solve the first-layer corners

Keep white on the bottom. Find a corner with white, place it in the top layer above the slot whose two side centers match its other colors, and use a short trigger to insert it.

When the target slot is at front-right, repeat R U R' U' until the corner enters correctly. If a white corner is stuck in the bottom layer incorrectly, use the same trigger once to bring it out, then realign and insert it.

  • Checkpoint. The entire white face is solved, and the first row of every side matches its center.
  • Common mistake. Inserting a white corner above the wrong two side centers.

Step 3: insert the four middle-layer edges

Keep white on the bottom. Find a top-layer edge with no yellow sticker. Match its front color to the front center; the other color tells you whether the edge belongs in the slot to the right or left.

For a right slot, play the right insertion. For a left slot, play the left insertion. If a middle edge is in the wrong slot or flipped, use either insertion once to eject it, then insert it correctly.

  • Checkpoint. The bottom two rows of all four side faces are solved.
  • Common mistake. Trying to insert a top edge that contains yellow.

Step 4: make the yellow cross

Turn the cube so yellow is on top. Ignore yellow corners for now. You may see a dot, an L shape, or a horizontal line made by the yellow edge stickers.

Use F R U R' U' F'. Hold the line horizontally. Hold the L like a small corner in the upper-left of the U face. Repeat as needed until all four yellow edge stickers face up.

  • Checkpoint. Yellow forms a cross on top; side colors do not need to match yet.
  • Common mistake. Holding the line vertically or changing orientation midway through the algorithm.

Step 5: orient the yellow corners

Now make the entire top face yellow without worrying whether each corner is in its final location. Put an unsolved yellow corner at front-right-up.

Repeat R' D' R D until that corner's yellow sticker faces up. Turn only U to bring another unsolved corner into front-right-up, then repeat. The lower layers may look scrambled during the repetitions; they return when the sequence is completed for each corner.

  • Checkpoint. The complete U face is yellow, even if the side colors of the corners do not match.
  • Common mistake. Rotating the whole cube between corners instead of turning only U.

Step 6: position the yellow corners

Look for a side where the two top corner stickers have the same side color. That matching pair belongs above the center of that color. Hold the matching pair on the back; if no pair exists, run the algorithm once from any angle to create one.

Use U R U' L' U R' U' L, then inspect again. Repeat with a matching pair at the back until all four top-layer corners sit between the correct three centers.

  • Checkpoint. Every yellow corner's side stickers match the surrounding side centers.
  • Common mistake. Checking only the yellow sticker instead of all three colors of each corner.

Step 7: position the final yellow edges

The last four edges need to cycle around U. If one side is already solved, hold that completed side at the back. The other three top edges must move clockwise or counterclockwise.

Use F2 U L R' F2 L' R U F2. If the cube is not solved, realign U, put any completed side at the back, and apply it again. Follow the 3D player rather than mirroring moves from memory.

  • Final checkpoint. All six faces are solid and every piece matches its centers.
  • Common mistake. Holding the solved side at the front instead of the back.

When the tutorial no longer matches your cube

Stop when a completed checkpoint breaks unexpectedly. First undo the last complete algorithm if you know exactly where the error happened. Otherwise, compare the current cube with the checkpoint before trying more formulas.

If you cannot identify the stage, enter the exact six-face state in the 3x3 cube solver. It can flag missing colors or an impossible state and provide a recovery sequence. After you can solve consistently, use the cube timer to practice one stage at a time.
