Rubik's Cube Color Scheme: Opposite Colors and the Six-Face Net
Use the centers to identify each face, learn the three opposite-color pairs, and keep U, D, F, B, L, and R consistent when entering a cube.
A standard six-color 3x3 cube is not just six colors in any arrangement. Opposite faces form fixed pairs, and the four side centers follow a fixed order around the puzzle. That relationship is what tells a solver which photographed or entered face is U, R, F, D, L, or B.
If you are entering a real cube, check its actual centers first. Then keep one top and front face fixed while using the photo cube solver or the flat editor.
The three standard opposite-color pairs
On the common Western color scheme used by most modern six-color cubes, white is opposite yellow, red is opposite orange, and green is opposite blue. Opposite centers can never share an edge on a normally assembled cube.
The pairs alone do not define the complete scheme. The order of the four side colors also matters. With white on U and green on F in the net below, red is R, orange is L, blue is B, and yellow is D.
- White ↔ Yellow. These are the U and D faces in the example orientation.
- Red ↔ Orange. These are the R and L faces in the example orientation.
- Green ↔ Blue. These are the F and B faces in the example orientation.
Why center pieces define the 3x3 faces
A 3x3 center is attached to the internal core and does not trade places with another center during normal turns. The center color therefore tells you the solved color of that face, even when every edge and corner is scrambled.
Edges must eventually match the two adjacent centers, and corners must match the three centers around their corner. If a center is assigned to the wrong face in a solver, the color counts may look correct while the piece relationships become impossible.
How to read U, D, F, B, L, and R
Face letters describe positions from one chosen holding orientation: U is up, D is down, F is front, B is back, L is left, and R is right. They do not permanently mean white, yellow, green, blue, orange, and red.
Choose U and F first. Those two adjacent faces anchor the remaining four positions. When you rotate the physical cube to inspect another face, track where the original U and F moved instead of renaming the face now pointing toward you as F.
- U and D are opposite. They appear above and below F in a flat net.
- F and B are opposite. B sits at the far end of the four-face side strip.
- L and R are opposite. They sit immediately to the left and right of F.

This solved 3x3 net uses white U, red R, green F, yellow D, orange L, and blue B. Opposite faces do not touch; the four side faces run L–F–R–B across the middle row.

Enter adjacent faces without rotating one upside down
The most common face-entry mistake is photographing six correct colors with one face rotated 90 or 180 degrees. The stickers are all present, but the edge and corner positions no longer agree.
Keep the physical cube's chosen U direction at the top of each face photo. For D and B, pause and check the top edge before capture; those are the faces most likely to be flipped when you turn the cube toward the camera.
- Anchor U and F. Remember both center colors and keep their shared edge as your orientation reference.
- Move around the side strip. Capture F, R, B, and L in sequence while keeping the same physical U face on top.
- Capture U and D last. Use the side centers to confirm which edge of each face belongs above F.
Non-standard, sticker-swapped, and picture cubes
Not every cube uses the common Western arrangement. Older regional schemes, custom stickers, replacement center caps, and reassembled puzzles can change the side-color order. A picture cube also adds image orientation even when its colors look standard.
Trust the physical centers in front of you instead of forcing the example colors. The 3x3 cube solver lets you edit 3x3 centers, but the six selected centers must still be unique and consistent with the pieces.
How color orientation works on a 2x2 cube
A 2x2 has no fixed center pieces, so you cannot read face colors from the middle. Instead, choose one real corner as an orientation reference: its three colors identify three adjacent faces, and their opposite colors identify the remaining faces.
